Our Village
The Village of Groton, incorporated in 1860, is located in the northeast corner of Tompkins County in the Fingerlakes region of New York State.
Originally, the Village was host to many small industries and was later a home to Smith Corona Typewriter Company from 1909 to 1983. Today there still are a few fine smaller concerns and many of our residents who work in Ithaca and Cortland reside in our Village.
The Village provides fire and police protection, electric, water and sewer utilities and has an active recreation department in conjunction with the Town of Groton. We have a Municipal Pool at Memorial Park that is open to the public during the summer.
We also have an active Community Development program that has provided many opportunities to our residents and businesses.

Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over
The Results of Drunk Driving Could Be Crushing
Groton, NY - During the Labor Day holiday, including the end of summertime and the busy Labor Day weekend, the Village of Groton Police Department and The Tompkins County Sheriff's Stop DWI is dedicated to decrease impaired driving. From August 19 through September 5, The Village of Groton Police Department will be participating in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement period. In support of the law enforcement community's dedication to protecting the lives of residents in their communities, you'll see officers working together during this time to take drunk drivers off the roads. No matter how you plan to celebrate the end of the season this year, make sure you plan it safely.
As you head out to festivities during the end of summer and Labor Day weekend, remember: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.
We need commitment from our community members that they'll keep the streets free of drunk drivers so that everyone can have a safe summertime and Labor Day holiday. We want our community members to understand that it's our first priority to keep people safe, so we're asking everyone to plan ahead if they know they'll be out drinking, use the resources available to be safe.
The Village of Groton Police Department recommends using safe alternatives to drinking and driving: those alternatives are or can be, to take a cab, use public transportation, Lyft, Uber or friends and family, please Don't Drink and Drive.
